Stories of Volunteers
Joseph Bechhofer is a Touro student and Psychology major, and a Big Brother volunteer who was matched with an individual from 41st street OHEL Residence. Volunteering twice a week, Joseph works one on one with an individual who was having trouble integrating and socializing with others. Joseph has helped this individual nurture self-confidence and better living skills and was instrumental in this individuals graduation to an apartment program - which provides greater independence. As Joseph reflects, "working at the Kadima Program with individuals suffering from psychological and social difficulties has completely broadened my horizons in understanding the necessity to help and comfort those going through rough times. In helping such individuals grow and overcome challenges, I feel I am rewarded"Â
For over 10 years Hadassa Farkas has been a volunteer at OHEL and life-line for many clients. While a full-time Special Education professional Hadassa has worked as a Big Sister with children and adults in OHEL's Foster Care and Domestic Abuse Departments.
Currently, Hadassa is running a new and innovative Domestic Abuse Art Program for the children of the mothers in the program. The Art Program allows the children to express themselves through art, developing their self confidence. The program meets each Monday for one hour and the children create both individual and team projects, relaxing, building friendships and taking their minds away from the stresses of family life.Â
