OHEL New Jersey Hosts Teaneck Training for The Yeshiva Counseling Network Group
On December 3, 2014 The OHEL Northern New Jersey Regional Family Center hosted the Yeshiva Counseling Network, a network of school psychologists from around the tri state area for a conversation with OHEL’s director of Trauma and Bereavement, Dr. Norman Blumenthal.
School psychologists and mental health support staff from Ben Porat Yosef, Bruriah, Frisch, Kushner (RKYHS), Ma’ayanot Yeshiva High School, Magen David Yeshiva, MTA, RYNJ, SAR, TABC, Yavneh Academy, Yeshiva Ketana of Passaic, Yeshivat Noam and project S.A.F.E were all in attendance.
The Yeshiva Counseling Network is organized by Dr. Aliza Frohlich, the school psychologist of the Yavneh Academy in Paramus and the event was organized by Dr. Frohlich and Rabbi Jeremy Donath, OHEL’s community coordinator of Northern NJ.
Dr. Blumenthal presented various traumatic scenarios that a student may face throughout their lifetime, and how a school, both at the elementary and high school level can best assist their students while dealing through each crisis. The training provided a way for the various school psychologists, each with their own developed support staff, to draw from the expertise and experience of Dr. Blumenthal in an effort for continued education in this difficult area.
Dr. Norman Blumenthal, internationally renowned trauma expert, also leads OHEL’s Crisis Response Team, which has trained clinicians on call to respond to traumatic events in the community. Some of the services provided by the OHEL specialists include: Death notification as needed, bereavement services such as in the case of a tragic accident or untimely death, and crisis response to community members after a traumatic event, suicide, life threatening trauma, and acts of violence in the community.
The event, sponsored by OHEL, is part of an ongoing growing relationship with the schools through OHEL’s school based services department. OHEL has provided support staff in over 60 schools throughout the tri-state area, including local NJ schools BPY, Frisch, Kushner, and TABC. OHEL’s Northern New Jersey Regional Family Center in Teaneck is led by clinical supervisor Dr. Zipporah Tokayer-Torbiner, who has also spent many years as part of OHEL’s Crisis Response Team.
